Method of Controlling Johnson Grass in Southwest
Oklahoma A and M College Experiment Station reports a carefullly followed method to kill Johnson grass. Mow in late May to early June, spray after the second growth with calcium or sodium chlorate at 100 gallons per acre with one pound per gallon. Expect at least 95 percent kill on first spray. Use suitable sprayers for area size. In late August to September plow shallow and cultivate until frost, then plant to a row crop next year and remove missed plants. Heavy pasture or summer fallow can aid control. Fire precautions: no smoking, keep cans closed, add 15 percent calcium chloride to reduce fire risk.
