Wake County Court Hears Manslaughter Case At Auburn Wreck

The Wake Superior Court sits this week with a special jury for Dr Rowland and wife on murder charges, and a true bill for manslaughter against several Southern Railway officials tied to the Auburn wreck that killed four men. Proceedings may delay as other trials proceed and public notice heats up between newspapers over railway discharge payments. John Chandler and Miss Annie Stewart wed in Baltimore after Chandler’s Durham Hardware role and the couple plan a wedding tour before returning to Durham.

Death of Young Lady from Typhoid in Durham

Ms Canera Page an orphan from Oxford Orphan Asylum died at Watts Hospital last Thursday of typhoid fever. Age sixteen. She leaves one blind sister. She had many friends in Durham. The funeral and burial were held Thursday afternoon.

Thom Carroll Dies at 22 After Typhoid Fever

Thom Carroll of four miles west of town died last Thursday from typhoid fever. He leaves a mother, five sisters and two brothers. The funeral is at Mt Hermon Church at 3 o clock this afternoon with burial at the church cemetery.

Convict Escapes From Lumberton Penitentiary

Penitentiary authorities report the escape of John Moore a 40 year old white convict from Wilkes County serving five years for manslaughter. This is the second escape this month and overall escapes in two years have fallen due to extra guard measures. Raleigh Correspondent Charlotte Observer.

Explosion in Well Injures Two Men Near Chapel Hill

A dynamite blast while two men Buck Clark and Eugene Davis Brown were digging a well about one mile west of Chapel Hill caused a premature explosion. Clark suffered severe burns and was not expected to recover. Davis also burned and bruised but anticipated to recover. A match or fuse caused the ignition in the hole where dynamite was packed.

Tree Struck and House Damaged by Lightning in Chatham County

A large white oak in the Hanner family's Ore Hill garden was struck by lightning during a Sunday thunderstorm. The storm splintered the tree, its fallen limbs crashed into the roof, breaking window lights and injuring no one seriously except causing shocks to Mr. Hanner and several children. Only two rooms remain habitable.

Man Held to Court on Whiskey Charges after Evasion

John Robertson, suspected of selling whiskey last January, was arrested last Wednesday night after eluding police since January. In court the mayor bound him over in two cases with bonds totaling 150 dollars. unable to post, he remained jailed.

Extension sought in railway rate testimony in Asheville

Judge Montgomery’s master in chancery failed to file a report after the Sept 25 deadline. Judge Pritchard urged both sides to agree on a time extension to complete evidence on the 2 1/4 cent passenger fare law. If agreement fails, he will issue a formal order with a new date.

Death of Mrs Katie Leathers on Guess Road

Mrs Katie Leathers age 85 died last Wednesday at her home two miles from Durham on the Guess road. General debility was the cause. Funeral and burial were held at the home Thursday.
