The National Election produced large total votes with Republican gains and Bryan expected to surpass Parker’s four year tally. Durham County shows some reductions and gains while Smith defeats Bramham by 100 votes. Complete national returns await next issue.
The National ticket lost nationally but North Carolina stays firmly Democratic. The next legislature will be controlled by Democrats with large margins, including at least a 40,000 vote majority for Kitchin and the state ticket. Some counties show smaller or larger margins.
Durham county Democrats defeated Republicans with large majorities across the county. The closest result was for the legislature with Mr. Smith ahead of Bramham by 100 votes. Sheriff Harvard led Warren by 560, larger than last election. Full returns to follow in the next issue.
William Tilley of Rougemont died at the county home after two weeks there. He was 67, a Confederate veteran, leaving two sons and two daughters. Interment followed at his old home near Rougemont. The item also notes local notes from Route 5 Roxboro, including farming remarks and community chatter.
Durham residents were startled when Nan Ray killed rival Rena Bumpass with a razor on Saturday evening near the Durham Cigar Co. store. Ray escaped as authorities moved in. Lizzie Mangum was arrested as an abettor. Bumpass died from neck wounds after the attack. the interment for Bumpass occurred Sunday afternoon.
Mr Matthews married Miss Carrie Neal at her home in Oriental in a dawn ceremony at 6 o clock due to a train schedule. The couple, surprised by Durham friends, took a brief bridal trip before returning to Durham to reside at 305 Elizabeth Street.
Durham suspends tobacco sales and closes banks on election days to allow broad participation. Local commerce notes include a shoe ad from Hobgoods promising warm, durable footwear at appealing prices.
Democrats rally at the Academy of Music while Republicans meet at Parrish Warehouse drawing large crowds. Bands paraded through the town by auto and street car as supporters cheered. Campaign managers judged the events by noise and turnout rather than speeches.
