Death of Bishop McTyeire at Vanderbilt Campus
The Weekly Recorder reports the death of Bishop McTyeire, long a leader in the Southern Methodist Church and a key figure in Vanderbilt University. Born July 18, 1824 in Barnwell County, D. C., he served as editor in New Orleans and Nashville, and led the university’s formation as a lasting educational empire. He died February 11, 1889 at the Vanderbilt President’s Mansion, with simple burial rites and a legacy as author of the history of Methodism. The issue also carries editorials on President Harrison’s inaugural address and tobacco policy debates, plus regional notices and business notes.
