Regular correspondent reports on visits among Granville and Person counties residents, church activities at Redmountain Baptist, Children’s Day plans, a 16 foot monument to Capt. Wm. Bowling, memorial window, school and social events, weather notes, and a tragic railroad death in Andrews Chapel, with community remarks and local color throughout.
A pretty church wedding was solemnized at the First Duar terian church last Tuesday at 6 30 in the evening. Miss Ebert Rawls, daughter of Mr and Mrs E B Rawls, married Mr W J Strickler of Greensboro. They plan to live in Durham after their ceremony. Lonnie and Arthur were sent to the roads by the mayor Tuesday for violating quarantine laws. They had smallpox in May and, despite promising the county health officer to stay home, were arrested and sent to the roads for 20 and 30 days respectively. We are having chills and days. H. M. Bridwell of Fountain Inn South Carolina died Monday afternoon in Durham after a week of illness. He was 25, survived by a wife, his mother, two sisters and a brother. Funeral from J. P. Campbell’s home was held Tuesday and the remains buried at Maplewood Cemetery.
Miss Mary Duke daughter of Mr and Mrs B N Duke fell ill last week. Doctors O Kelly Graham diagnosed appendicitis. Dr Gil Wille of New York arrived by special train on Sunday and performed a successful operation. She was improving by Monday and progressing well.
The Merchants Association met Tuesday night to address telephone rates and hotel accommodations. They voted to keep business phone prices while urging residence rates to stay at the old levels, citing Raleigh Charlotte and Asheville comparisons. A committee will lobby city officials for improved Durham hotel accommodations, with plans for a new hotel discussed but not yet acted on.
