United Confederate Veterans Organized Under Governor Gordon

The Confederate veterans formed the United Confederate Veterans in New Orleans on June 10 with Gov. John B. Gordon elected as commanding general. The group aims to unite veteran associations, preserve war relics, document history, aid the needy, and honor comrades through a federation of societies. The next meeting will be in Chattanooga.

Confederate Veterans call for July 4 meetings in North Carolina

An 1889 call from J. S. Carr and the North Carolina Confederate Veterans Association urges county assemblies at courthouse sites on July 4 to form Confederate Veterans County Associations and select two patriotic ladies to aid in establishing a soldiers' home for aged veterans. The message asks counties to report proceedings to Secretary W. C. Stronach in Raleigh.
