A man named Ripley attempted a large furniture purchase totaling 1200 dollars with a 1500 dollar Hartford check, which was cashed by a National Bank before a Hartford telegraph exposed the fraud. The suspect Binley fled the city and remains unfound as authorities pursue leads amid the wider cold weather and relief efforts.
