The Durham conferences urge reform in burial customs to ease living costs and health risks. They advocate simple caskets and limited carriages, brief grave services in bad weather with heads covered, prohibiting Sunday funerals except in absolute need, and moderated mourning attire to reflect gospel hope.
A resolution from Durham figures urged changes to funeral practice including omitting the funeral sermon, delaying casket opening, and adjusting burial etiquette to reduce distress and public scrutiny. Signed by J. W. Wellons and others, it calls for publication in Raleigh News and Observer and town papers.
