The notice states a weekly issue published every Tuesday morning with a subscription price of $1.50 per year in advance, listing Gifford and Larkin as publishers.
The Chicago Republican lists candidates for governor and other state offices with early campaign signs. Names include Palmer, Oglesby, Underwood, Bates, Smith, Rummel, Koerner, Munn, Lippincott, Miller, Mayo, Bunn, Bateman, Carter, Rowatt, Hough, and others. A bill may shift six at large Congressmen from districts to statewide election. Col Hugh is a well known local figure.
This week we will publish all outstanding advertising bills and will call upon debtors during the week to settle accounts. Lent begins February 14 as Elgin notices cold weather and Ground Hog Day. A kerosene explosion destroyed John Glaspie’s Audora residence last Tuesday causing $4000 loss. Yorkville physician Capt. Hobbs died after leg surgery. Springfield lawmakers plan to visit Elgin February 2 to inspect the Insane Asylum nearing occupancy. Rev. Burnham of Newburyport holds meetings in Elgin’s Baptist church with noted good. Rumor hints at a New York boarding house opening in Dundee. Sen. James W. Eddy and Sen. Marsh ill. A grand social hop is planned for February 22 in Dundee with Preston’s Quadrille Band. Knights of the Blade hosted a hop at Hoagland Hall with about 40 couples dancing late. A February 1 donor party at New Hall for Rev. Scott aims to fill the hall. Also includes essays on trials and a report of a drunken disturbance at a school riverfront home and a Minnesota presiding elder’s rebuke tale.
A reader-column from January 29 1872 condemns two editorials in the Bluff City Advocate. It accuses threats against a postmaster and dictation of Dundee citizens on education, likening the Advocate to a ship sailing under false colors and questioning who informs the paper.
Joseph King administrator announces a probate notice for the estate of Almira B King, deceased, Kane County Illinois. He will appear before the county court in Geneva on the third Monday in March to settle claims and all creditors must present their claims and payments are requested from those owing money to the estate.
The Cincinnati Times notes the immense value of Webster's Unabridged, praising its 115 000 words and claim that if only one volume could be saved from a fire it would be this dictionary. It argues that scholars rely on a full lexicon more than the general public, reflecting on language precision and education.
