Johnsen to lead Vector Control District in St Helens

O. J. Johnsen, former Duchesne resident, named director of the Columbia County Vector Control District with headquarters in St Helens. He previously supervised sanitarians at the Columbia County Health Department and has a background in medical entomology from the U S Department of Agriculture and Oregon State University. Mrs. Johnsen, formerly Sally L. Lewis of Salt Lake City, and the couple live in Scappoose with a newly adopted infant son.

Mary Jeanne Merril spent the weekend at the Bill Tollifson home while attending school at the Y. Gus Peater senior and family hosted their son. John Burdick traveled to Roosevelt for the day. Norma Earl Verna Mecham and Zella Grant joined them in Roosevelt Thursday. Maxine Burdick Shirlee Burdick and Duane Meriwether attended Ellen Madsen's funeral in Castle Dale on Tuesday. Annie Bailey of Farrow visited Burdick’s sister in law. Bobby Day and Billy Wimmet returned home from school for the weekend. Earnest J Wilson and wife visited friends and relatives in Duchesne over the weekend.

Oratory Contest Set For January at Duchesne High

The National High Schools Oratorical Contest will take place January 20 at Duchesne High School with junior high students in the afternoon and senior high in the evening. The public is invited to hear young speakers discuss Americanism and the U S Constitution. Elden R Wilcken, Americanism Chairman for Duchesne Post No 22 American Legion, will direct the event with Principal James Keith Rogers of Duchesne High School.

Postal receipts rise in Duchesne for year ending 1965

Postal receipts were higher for the period ended Dec 31 1965 than the prior year. Over the counter sales in the last quarter of 1964 stood at 2111.13 versus 2105.19, while other receipts from box rents money order fees and envelopes totaled 431.20 this quarter versus 301.45 in 1964. Total quarterly receipts reported by Postmaster Don A Mayhew reached 2536.39 for the period ending Dec 31 compared with 2412.58 a year earlier.

In 1965 Duchesne County granted 12 divorces, up from 9 in 1964, with 17 in 1963 and 19 in 1962. Marriage licenses issued totaled 38 in 1965, versus 44 in 1964, 43 in 1963, 53 in 1962, and 51 in 1961. Licenses were issued one in Jan and Feb, three in Mar April May Oct Nov Dec, six in Jun and Jul, seven in Aug, none in Sept. Divorces occurred one in Jan Feb May Oct Nov, two in Jun Jul Aug Dec.
