Expectation that Southern company's off well west of Duchesne will restart drilling this summer with cooperation from landowners and permit holders. News notes potential re use of current rigs and gear, possible new casing and equipment, and added local activity in Duchesne and surrounding basin as oil prospects continue.
James Dalgleish of the American Legion Du ne Post presented a plan for uniform reel decorations using American flags. A 12 foot high hand-pole flag line would run along the street every 25 feet, set in the cement and removable for special occasions to greatly improve the town’s appearance.
Karl Lemon of Duchesne County high school defeated Ruby Agen of Uintah high school in the UBIC formal contest. Judges praised clear arguments on supporting a trunk line railroad through Uintah Basin. Lemon will deliver the winning oration at the UBIC county meeting.
Mrs. Bertha Baker Barger, 41, of Vernal, was killed when a touring car she drove plunged into the Rocky Point canal near Feltch sawmill, four miles north of Vernal. Her husband James Barger, also in the car, freed himself but could not save her before authorities retrieved the body, about a half hour later. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Baker of Grand Junction Col. and had six children.
Co. P Watterson, operator of the Myton Roller Mills, is putting its machinery in thorough running order and fumigating the plant. Two new flour brands are planned with vision on both hard and soft wheats, and the mill expects to handle over 50 000 bushels of grain this fall and winter if farmers raise it. Flour from the Myton Roller Mills is claimed to be superior to outside mills.
At a Roosevelt meeting the Uintah Basin Baseball Association set dates times and prices for six towns Arcadia Duchesne City Port Duchesne Neola Roosevelt and Vernal Officials Joseph Robison and William Wallace presented and accepted the official schedule for the season with a 25 cent admission and 8:30 start times.
An advocate urges settlement of the Uintah basin highlighting cheap land with water rights from $10 to $50 per acre, praising the climate for white settlers and urging backed development. The piece argues farming is a profession requiring science, calls for boosters, homes, and improved agriculture to attract and sustain population and independence.
Uintah and Daggett county officials discussed using state road tax money to match forest funds for the Vernal Manila road. A $12,500 local expense and cost sharing between counties were reviewed with the state road commission and federal officials. A cooperative agreement will be prepared for county action once expense shares are fixed.
The assessor reports Duchesne County total property valuation at 5 745 160 this year versus 5 752 256 in 1926, a drop due to lower real estate and livestock values. Real estate totals 34 654 508 this year, livestock value falls from 933 267 to 908 744, and improvements reach 607 700 with other personal property at 697 098.
A Sunday inquest at Midview, before Justice I R Tuttle, returned a verdict of death from unknown causes for Edgar Carter Jr whose body was found in the road near his ranch by Mrs Alton Smith. He was 44, survived by parents and four siblings, with funeral at Forest Dale Utah.
R A Carson secretary treasurer of Maude-Ellen Oil announces immediate resumption of drilling on the test well six miles northwest of Vernal on Neal dome in Ashley valley. Hole stood at 380 feet when halted last September with objective to reach Pennsylvania sands around 2500 to 3000 feet and oil shows expected at 750 to 800 feet in Shinarump formation.
Miss Alice Birch of Duchesne high school won the eastern Utah district oratorical contest on the constitution held at Price. Her oration titled The Constitution advances her to the state finals in Salt Lake City, with the chance to reach Los Angeles and compete nationally in Washington, D. C. The Times-Mirror Company of Los Angeles sponsors the movement.
The Sterling Transportation company operating an auto truck service between Salt Lake and Vernal through Strawberry Alley ran at a loss last year. Revenues were 94985.25 dollars, expenses 34441.70 dollars, plus seven taxes. It drew on capital by 8519.29 dollars for accrued depreciation.
Estimates from the U S Department of Agriculture show the farm population fell by more than 500000 in 1927, the largest yearly drop since 1910. January 1, 1927 farm population estimated at about 20 million, down from 20.8 million the previous year, based on 1926 census figures used as a base for circulations.
Engineers H. R. Allen and Levi Muir were sent by the state road commission to open gravel pits west of Duchesne for bidders on a road project extending ten times west. The project should accept bids soon as crews gather pits and assess deposits along the route. Crushed cobble rock will be used, with a central pit desired to reduce equipment transport costs.
Duchesne board awards three new school buildings to Milton Rigger and heating to Bishop Montgomery of Salt Lake. Neola, Apaleo, and Bluebell four room units begin soon with standard offices and libraries. Electrical bids rejected and July meetings move to the first Saturday.
