Shortage of Western Lambs and Wool Hits Markets
Advices from the western sheep country report a material shortage in spring lambs with total production in Montana Wyoming Washington Oregon Idaho and Nevada only about 10 percent of normal. Wool supply tighter as contracting rises and prices push higher with fleeces selling up to 38 cents a pound and some clips to 40. Ewes are scarce as breeding stock declines and losses from a cold spring reduce the flock, signaling a smaller summer and fall supply and many lambs held for next winter.
