The Duchesne Drug Company has installed a Mechanicold fountain, electrically cooled with a forty gallon ice cream capacity and room for bottled goods. It features a carbonated water system with a settling tank to reduce cloudiness. The unit’s sand colored marble and multi flavor service mark a major upgrade for the store.
In January the Gaton basin shipped 175 head of hogs by truck to Salt Lake stockyards, enough for two full carloads. The effort, despite bait reads through the Strawberry, was reported by the livestock committee of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. Grain fed hog prices ranged 15 to 25 cents per hundred over river top prizes, with Salt Lake buyers offering a ready market for finished pork from the basin.
A Utah report to Governor George H. Dern from Henry H. Blood outlines $1,848,000 to be spent on Uintah Basin highways. The plan covers $981,000 completed and $967,900 for early construction, including Castle Gate–Duchesne and extensions toward Provo Canyon or Parley’s Canyon. B F Moore agri cultural agent for the Denver and Salt Lake railroad and J R Stanton of Craig visited Vernal to solicit wool and lamb shipments from Ashley valley and Uintah basin. Moore said wool can be routed via Craig over the Denver and Salt Lake railroad as cheaply as other routes and noted plan to extend into the Uintah basin after the Moffat tunnel. Freight rates would drop, enabling cheaper shipment of goods.
State road engineer S. C. Risley and crew arrived in Duchesne to begin the second 15 mile section toward Fruitland. The initial 10 miles were finished two months ago and bids for the first stretch will come soon. Projections say a graveled Duchesne to Fruitland road by next fall with additional Strawberry valley mileage this year.
Meeker Colorado stockmen seek another migratory livestock bill to keep livestock outside the state from using ranges. The proposal would designate ranges as sheep or cattle ranges. A recent Colorado Legislature law on the matter was ruled unconstitutional in Moffat County Court and upheld by the state supreme court.
Governor Dern writes to Senator Reed urging passage of legislation now before Congress to raise pensions for Indian War veterans and their dependents. He notes most veterans are over 90 and urges speedy action at the current session.
