Deseret State Idea Debated by Brigham Young University Professor
Professor Thomas Romney of Brigham Young University argues that Deseret’s westward plan had a clear civil government aim and was not treasonous. He notes pioneers studied maps, used Fremont’s notes, and President Young’s “This Is the Place” reflected a real valley vision. The talk outlines the provisional government idea, the 1849 constitutional convention, and the shift to a Utah territory with broader western claims.
