A new organization with $50,000 capital stock, named the Independence Investment association, has formed. Shares are $100 each and investments will be limited to Independence and nearby areas.
A sharp swindler collected about 400 from Prairie township Keokuk county residents. Victims paid up to 25 each to prosecute saloon keepers. When supervisors published expenses the public learned taxpayers bore attorney fees, revealing the deceit.

A passenger train on the Cotton Belt railway ran against orders and derailed near Humphrey and Golden stations, Arkansas. Four killed and eighteen injured, with seven killed per the official Cotton Belt dispatch. Mrs. Henson identified, others unnamed. Engineers and crew reported missing or injured include Engineer Peterson and Conductor Field.
