Rev. George W. Baxter of Knoxville was found guilty by the Des Moines Presbytery on charges of immorality. The verdict cites four specifications including breach of promise and soliciting sexual intercourse and imposes suspension from his ministerial functions and church privileges until repentance. The vote was 15 to 2.
McCage Benge, who settled in Davis County in 1844, died at his home near Bloomfield at age 111. He began voting in 1796 before reaching adulthood and cast ballots in every presidential election since, with his last vote for Harrison.
The Hardin county grand jury returned an indictment against Paul Aiken for brutally assaulting J. H. Scales in October as Scales was about to board the night train home from court. Aiken faces a maximum five year state prison sentence.

Muscatine Dec 24 J M Kidd mine boss and workers Emer Rosenberry and Alfred Simon entered an unused cast mine in Alms county to prospect for improvements. They were overcome by foul gas and died despite brief rescue efforts.
A call for a congress of Catholics from the United States to meet in Chicago during the World’s Fair was issued. Archbishop Feehan and Wm. J. A Santa Fe passenger train wrecked near La Junta, eight pullman cars destroyed, no injuries except one hurt. Later, the Raymond excursion train from California collided with a stock train, crushing the caboose and three sheep cars while the Pullmans fared lightly. Two trainmen and a stockman were slightly hurt.
In New Orleans on December 24 W. J. Parker Jr with insurance experts completed a thorough inquiry into the fire that destroyed his residence, concluding it was the work of an incendiary. Parkerson’s home has burned twice in the past year, and his prominence in reform movements is thought to have provoked the attacks.
