A Democratic gathering in Cascade and Whitewater counties is announced for Saturday September 26. Organizers including Hoh Bichards We Barker and Simon Hatelidine pledge attendance and address plans are promised, with many others stated to be present.
General Pope learned of the New Lisbon murder of a Milwaukee merchant. He directed Capt. Arnold to investigate and report for a court martial. Major Clowney was sent to collect facts and the soldiers were placed under arrest and moved toward civil trial as governor Salmonson supported the disposition.
Reports from Sept 28 detail a Confederate loan of francs and government actions in London and Bordeaux. The Alabama pirate issue is resolved in Bordeaux with the ship WB Nash cargo case settled at Brest, Slidell in Brest to settle affairs, and Maximilian’s Mexican crown speculation noted.
Crrug W. Field returns to night in the China to arrange the Atlantic telegraph project. Glass, Elliott & Co. bound to complete the work and have begun manufacturing the cable. Policies for all risk coverage issued on favorable terms amid the preparations. In Wassixerox, Sept. 23, soldiers sentenced for desertion and a wreck lies at the harbor mouth.
An unofficial dispatch from Chattanooga notes Monday’s battle with Longstreet’s corps. 1,600 charged, 415 returned, showing brutal fighting as Rosecrans’ forces held ground. Descriptions include reinforcements to Bragg, prisoner discharge of Gen Graham, and concerns over Savannah and Charleston defenses.
The English government plans court action to seek damages and may appeal to the House of Commons. The Washington letter notes Gen. Meade’s army moving toward Gordonsville and a potential clash with Lee before Sunday. Lee commands the Army of Virginia with about 46,000 troops remaining.
