A Welland Canal coal oil schooner fire drowns the captain. front-line communications resume.
Dispatches from Nashville describe encouraging news. General Mitchell chased rebel cavalry near Shelbyville on the 6th and routed the enemy with about 100 killed. Rail links repaired, telegraphic lines restored, Shelbyville sacking criticized, Bragg's Chattanooga bombardment deemed largely ineffective.

Report from St. Louis dated October 10 states rebel raiders struck the Pacific Railroad west of Jefferson City and are marching eastward. They reached within five miles of Tipton as Sedalia fortifications are reinforced with hay. No confirmed damage to the Pacific Railroad is reported yet.
The Evening Star from New Orleans reports Maj Gen Herron and Commodore Goldsborough among 165 sick soldiers and 161 rebel officers taken prisoner. The 19th Army Corps near Franklin. On the 3d Col Davis's command clashed with rebels under Capt Squires, rebels retreated after our first volley, Squires mortally wounded and Davis captured. Health of 13th and 19th corps excellent. Morgan town burned only for defensive demolitions by Union forces. Washington correspondents of the Times and Tribune face orders breach suspicions.
Midnight report notes the steamship City of Baltimore leaving Liverpool after a Sept. 30 passage via Queenstown. The London Times cites a rebel Vice President A. S. Stephens sailing for France to seek terms with Napoleon for Southern Confederacy recognition on emancipation grounds. Notes California secession rumor and Maximilian to meet a Mexican crown deputation on Oct. 3. Rumor of Russia-Poland title being ignored by England.
