Speakers including Nor th of Ohio Cozan Gunther McMasters Meuflally Rankin and others sent messages praising the cause and a series of resolutions denounced military arrests and demanded restoration of constitutional rights and civil discourse against federal overreach.
A comic note about General Hooker set in motion with grand promises that his headquarters would be in the saddle. Witty remarks claim his failure followed a misstep and mislocated headquarters. The Bangor Daily Times reports a snowfall on the 7th, while the Providence Bulletin notes frost on the land at Jamberland in Rhode Island.
A massive Indiana gathering on the 20th in Indianapolis saw vast Democratic turnout. Soldiers were ordered to stay in quarters but remained armed and present around Governor’s Circle. Clashes arose as crowd and militia faced off. speeches by Voorhees Merrick Hendricks and others urged unity and condemned arrests and abuses of power.
The Enquirer reports that near Suffolk Virginia on Tuesday a Rhode Island regiment and the 1220 New York exchanged fire mistaken for Rebels, causing multiple casualties before error was found. Monday two mounted rifles were badly cut up by Confederate forces, and Jackson fell to Union and Confederate actions with Joe Johnston commanding.
The dispatch boat Wilson reached this afternoon from Yazoo Mouth, after a Sunday march from Raymond to Jackson. Grant seized a 63-car tram of corn meal and bacon. Three miles of railroad near Jackson were destroyed and all bridges to the army flanks were removed. Supplies from Grand Gulf may be abandoned due to heavy labor for trains. The army holds eight days rations and expects a swift Haine's Hill march once shortages are cleared. Joe Johnson’s reinforcements are believed to be five or six hundred at most.
May 11 1663 report from St. Louis lists numerous soldiers from town and vicinity connected to Elliot H Hospital. Names include James J. eacotlius John P. Martin Peter Blanch ad Richard Stover James W. Bledson A 20th inf Joseph Waters 26th inf Wm Reed 29th inf and many others with unit references such as 4th 25th 26th and 30th infantry.
The War Department dismissed Lieut. Edgerly for voting Democratic and aiding others to vote that ticket. The Tribune warns of a purge of officers including generals, urging a reform to remove Copperheads and to pursue unity, liberty, and victory with abolitionist aims guiding the war.

Hartford Times reports a Civil War anecdote of self sacrifice as a lieutenant or soldier shielded Gen Hill during a close encounter with Confederate fire. It also notes a Missouri incident where a young man sacrificed his life to save a stranger with dependent family.
The scene at St George's Chapel during the Prince of Wales wedding showed Lord Palmerston seating himself then combing his whiskers. The moment was telegraphed to courts across Europe as news of the ceremony spread.
