An 1863 Newark gathering denounced martial law and the Vallandigham banishment. Protesters clashed with uniformed men as a banner was seized. speakers urged the right to free speech, constitutional rights, and peaceful ballot recourse against despotism.
At four this morning troops from Camp Douglas under Captain McDonald seized the Chicago Times office, halted presses, destroyed hundreds of papers, and posted a guard. About 8,000 papers had been printed. later, crowds on Randolph Street debated the action amid tense talk and threatened clashes.
A June Bellevue Argus report describes a large Democratic gathering with delegations from Brandon Otter Creek Prairie Springs and Jackson marching to the Fair Grounds led by the Andrew Brass Band.
