Monday edition notes Indians burned government hay and two ranches near Julesburg, drove off 400 cattle toward Mort Laramie, with 650 cattle seized at Valley Station. Three hour clash with 20 soldiers left 22 Indians dead. no soldiers harmed. Also reports grand jury in San Francisco dismissing piracy conspiracy charges, heavy rains, and several arriving ships.
The Savannah market house distributed food to formerly rich and now poor residents under authorized agents. Letters from Boston Mayor Lincoln to Savannah Mayor Arnold drew praise. Sherman’s advance is reported near Salt Rehatchie and Ashepro with rebel reinforcements to Branchville. Charleston gun crews move to Branchville and monitors join Dahlgren off Charleston. Reports say Charleston may evacuate as rebels shift heavy guns and monitor fleets. A Savannah letter notes Sherman’s army planned to move on the 20th. Other dispatches describe continuations along Appomattox lines and naval actions near Richmond and Fredericksburg with ironclads and batteries engaged. South Carolina and Georgia measures seek to burn cotton to deny enemy. Wilmington Journal says Yankees left Maj. Gen. Hoke’s front and concentrated at Fisher, with Smithville evacuated. Fort Anderson attempts to silence river access. In parallel, Sen. Tanac Funk of this district dies from erysipelas in the head. his wife dies four hours later.
Fire destroyed the pork packing and wholesale grocery establishment of Van ven & Heed at 2 a m. The building valued around $100000 with $50000 insured. The adjacent Commission house of HB Williams suffered $12000 to $21000 in wool damage. office of the G.A.R. post also burned with most papers lost. Total loss estimated near $110000. Admiral Porter reports capture of blockade runner Blenheim in Cape Fear river on January 24.
