A Nashville despatch says rebels captured five steamers and the gun-boat Slidell on the Cumberland and burned them. Gen Longstreet with 13 brigades arrived at Chattanooga to attack Rosecrans next week. Chattanooga rebel reports a large fleet of federal gun boats and transports on the Mississippi. Three hundred deserters from rebel regiments reached Murfreesboro. Washington specials note the House defeat on enlarging the Michigan and Illinois canal and widening the Erie canal locks by 95 to 48. The canal bill appears destined to pass.
Report details a December engagement at Galveston where Captain Shreeve and 70 men faced a large Confederate cavalry and artillery battery. Union defense at the wharf held for hours under heavy fire, with a white flag misread and subsequent rebel capture of supplies and cartridges. Casualties: roughly 10 killed and 20 wounded on the Union side.
New York January 16 report from St Jacques states the British gunboat Plover fired upon and overhauled the Dark Morning Star during an encounter at sea.
In Crosk Pennsylvania on January 16 a freshet raised the Delaware and Lehigh rivers. The river was several feet above normal depth at the dam and the Lehigh Valley Railroad bridge downstream was damaged, pausing train service for several days.
The Washington Intelligencer prints eight columns of intercepted Confederate letters to Mason and St Bell including a Lee letter dated last September lamenting Confederate losses at 350000 and detailing French consuls' move toward Galveston and Richmond with origins unclear.
The report details Confederate efforts from Paris and London to influence Texas secession, including orders to Maj. Magruder and a rescinded directive. It notes Mason’s reception in London, praises his restraint, and mentions Ceo. N. Sanders aiding English ironclad construction. Louisville reports flood damage from a Kentucky river railroad bridge, heavy snow, blocked roads, and record snowfall with 18 inches on the ground.
The Rain Storm reports the fortification at Arkansas Post fell to land forces on Sunday after siege and bombardment begun Friday evening by gunboats. A Confederate force of about 3,500 held earthworks with three eleven inch guns. all were captured along with munitions. Texas Rangers arrived as reinforcements and were taken prisoner.
Nashville dispatch reports Gen. Forrest with about 1900 men and 12 pieces of light artillery capturing five steamboats loaded with commissary stores and the gunboat Sidell on the Cumberland. The raid damaged bridges, disrupted mail, and prompted Confederate desertions and fund seizures in Nashville.
