The Dubuque Herald denounces ministers spreading praise for Lincoln’s assassination as divine providence and inciting mobs. It accuses fanatical priests of urging revolution and anarchy, contrasting them with patriotic citizens and priests who preach violence.
A brief note complains that an abolitionist paper in Independence seeks to ban the Herald from town as revenge for its misfortunes. It accuses the paper of being under control of a failed minister and urges Independence citizens, especially Republicans, to withdraw support, calling the situation wise in its own company.
