Indians Claim Land in Berkshire County Massachusetts
The Stockbridge Indians have filed land claims in three towns in Berkshire county including the whole of Egremont and parts of Egremont and Sheffield and Alfred. Though leased for years no extinguishment of their tithes to these lands has been found except for about forty acres. The tribe moved from Western Massachusetts to New York over eighty years ago and then to Wisconsin forty years ago, now numbering about three hundred fifty in destitute condition. Their claim is before the Massachusetts Legislature.
