A 2000-strong rebel force attacked a Nashville Charleston Railway passenger train, destroying track and killing or wounding guards. additional rail attacks reported on Louisville Road. Prisoners bound for Louisville. Other items include ship movements, a riot in Lancashire, and European reactions to Confederate recognition.
An expedition under Colonel Boone surprised Woodard and recaptured our stores, taking several prisoners. Skirmishing occurred this morning as Boone pursued the enemy three miles. In St Louis, transports and troops moved upriver with Elissa marine brigade and ironclad craft, while a new canal three miles above is cut eight miles long to the Mississippi. Farragut holds the river between Vicksburg and Port Hudson as Porter and Grant reconnoiter the Yazoo with force.
