Englishman John Bowen, about 64, recounts his alleged role in rail sabotage near Rosa's Switch and Carr's Rock, claiming he bent rails and shoveled spikes to fix tracks, leading to a train wreck. The engineer and fireman kept the engine alive while a rear detachment prevented a worse fate. no lives were lost.
An English-born man, likely a North Platte blacksmith, visited undertaker Jacob Gish on Farnam street and offered $20 to be measured for a coffin. He requested Gish kill him, but the undertaker refused, advised sleep and a new life, and the man departed vowing to die soon.

The French citizens of San Francisco marked the centennial of Napoleon I’s birthday in a solemn style. Senator Trumbull visited Helena and was greeted by a large crowd. Mark Twain bought into Buffalo Cypress and joined the editorial staff. Colonel Nagle, once of the Irish Brigade, died in New York after a fall from his residence. Commissioner Osborne dismissed Pratt for lack of evidence. Grant’s party visited Harrisburg as General Cameron hosted them. George Peabody’s health at White Sulphur Springs worsened. General Dix faced a $25,000 damages suit for alleged illegal imprisonment. The American Association for the Advancement of Science met in Salem with about 250 members. Banks, Ramsey, and Fenton were in Paris. J Ross Browne arrived in San Francisco from China. National Educational Convention delegates reached 15,000 in Trenton. National Superintendents, American Normal School, and National Teacher associations held meetings. Grant and family then reached Newport to stay with Governor Morgan. D B Hagar of Massachusetts was noted in connection with ongoing events.

After detectives found no grounds, officials demanded a $25,000 discharge and full receipt. He revealed hidden wealth and assets in a final, provocative demand before leaving. Also reports a Cheshire somnambulism case of a man routing milk wagon at night.

The CumberlandTac ey stern boat on the downriver trip near Shawneetown bar suffers a larboard boiler explosion killing and wounding many deck crew and passengers. The mate and crew extinguish fires, wreck towed to Shawneetown, casualties include mail agent Copeland among six dead. One woman passenger unharmed. Local Shawneetown aid praised.
