A Massachusetts lawyer argues that freedmen should gain the vote only after slavery’s harms fade and education and self-reliance rise. He contends loyalty as the test for suffrage, warns that denying black suffrage entrenches slavery’s influence, and urges immediate justice to avert future peril.
A Louisville Journal spoof warns that skipping weekly news can make one a target for con men who pluck, beguile, and ruin families. It cites John Smith in Cincinnati losing 3500 dollars and urges Western readers to stay informed. A New York Tribune note adds a tale of a found father recognizing his son amid a crowd. News items also report a lightning strike on the schooner F B Williams and a Mexican empire intrigue with an envoy to Europe.
A visitor describes Strasburg’s 1571 clock of vast size and complexity. Figures move with the hours, Time and an aging man strike noon, apostles appear after twelve, a crowing rooster sounds, and the church fills with awe at this enduring marvel built in the 16th century and largely unchanged except for repairs.
Government rapidly dismantles Richmond and Petersburg fortifications and ships cannon to Washington and other arsenals.
