Senate endorses Pentagon drug strike force and SDI debate

The Senate approved 95 to 5 an amendment to its defense bill allowing Pentagon funding for a multi national drug strike force if created. It also pressed on with the Strategic Defense Initiative debate, seeking to limit kinetic weapons spending and consider troop withdrawals from Europe amid broader defense budget tensions.

Elks Lodge Co. of Decatur Projects Along Rt 38

Dixon teachers rally at board meeting in show of unity

About 100 teachers from the Dixon Education Association attended the Dixon Public Schools Board of Education meeting to display unity ahead of mediation and potential contract talks. DEA President Jan Wagoner cited 191 teachers represented and called for orderly negotiations while noting insecurities over a new contract. The board canceled the Oct. 11 session and set a new date for Oct. 25.

Rita Welsh retires after 36 years of teaching in Oregon Illinois

Rita Welsh taught 36 years in the Oregon school system and in Ogle County. She valued inspiring students and saw many former pupils' children among today’s learners. Welsh recalls old days with heels gloves and traffic duty and says teaching remains a thrill.

Ferdinand Marcos dies in Hawaii after Philippines rule

Ferdinand E. Marcos, who led the Philippines from 1965 to 1986, died at 12:48 a.m. Hawaiian time at St. Francis Medical Center in Honolulu. The 72 year old, hospitalized since January 15 for lung ailments, had suffered heart and kidney failures and died of cardiac arrest. His son Ferdinand Marcos Jr. praised his father, while Imelda Marcos was reported well. Aquino opposed returning the body to the Philippines, citing safety and public order concerns.
