Amboy teachers and the school administration have agreed to federal mediation after failing to reach a settlement on a contract. One thousand forty students and 59 teachers are affected as the agreement awaits a mediator arrival. The district has no contract since August 23 and the AEA hopes for a quick peaceful resolution.
In Chicago the accused killer Gregory Turner stabbed Sheriff’s Deputy John Romanski with a homemade knife in a fifth floor courtroom lockup and fled with another inmate Darren Wallace for about five hours. Turner was tackled in a murder trial room, Wallace later surrendered after contact with his parole officer.
The 44th annual Glidden Antique Car Tour sponsored by the Antique Automobile Club of America visited Dixon on Tuesday afternoon. The 375-car tour features vehicles built between 1900 and 1935 and travels to different regions each year, with a stop at the Ronald Reagan home.
Rumors swear that Dixon Correctional Center will soon house women inmates. Officials say preparations exist for new inmates in Dixon but no final decision has been made on female housing. The DCC currently holds 1 070 inmates with 440 staff as renovations add 165 to 170 beds and prompt 40 more jobs.
Telegraph staff writer quotes Police Chief Tom Miller urging education to curb demand for drugs. He stresses early school outreach from kindergarten to graduation and a dedicated drug education class alongside addressing alcohol abuse as the No 1 legal drug. Miller notes cocaine and marijuana are common locally with no crack cocaine or heroin found yet, and cites the long, costly battle against drug trafficking.
The Dixon Education Association and the Dixon School board will resume bargaining on Oct. 2 with Jim Conanee of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in Hinsdale. DEA declared an impasse earlier this month and sought mediation after negotiations failed to reach a contract. The board had requested another session after Sept. 13, but the request was rejected by the DEA executive board. The three year DEA contract expired June 30 and teachers returned to school without a contract.
