Gilbert rips inland spawns 20 tornadoes
Hurricane Gilbert struck sparsely populated parts of northeastern Mexico with 143 mph winds, torrential rain and at least 20 tornadoes. The storm drove up to 350,000 people to flee across the border, caused extensive damage from Ciudad Victoria to the Rio Grande Valley, and prompted large sheltering efforts in Matamoros and along the Texas coast.
