Thompson signs AIDS test bill while vetoing dentist ban

Governor James R. Thompson signed a law allowing doctors to order AIDS tests without patient consent in certain cases, citing public health needs. Simon vows to push rail labor settlement by Sept nine

Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois threatened to press legislation to impose a settlement if no deal is reached between Chicago and North Western Railroad and its union by September 9. He warned a second commuter strike could affect 41,000 riders on the C N W lines and noted divisions between union leaders and the railroad. The dispute centers on eliminating 1150 brakemen positions amid debated technology gains.

Norden convicted in Lee County marijuana delivery trial

A Lee County jury of seven men and five women found 30 year old Michael Norden guilty of promoting the sale of marijuana purchased last April Fool's Day. Norden testified he merely introduced two men to an undercover officer and denied aiding a drug sale. The jury deliberated over four hours and five minutes, and Norden faces two to five years in prison.
