Fog rolling in from the bay covered San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, obscuring the landmark from view in heavy mist. The scene resembled a vanishing act as the famous structure disappeared into the fog over the waters.
Lee County Sheriff Tim Bivins again asks the finance and executive committees for one more deputy after a 14 to 10 board vote blocked two. Cost estimates total about 22,300 for hiring plus 2,600 for schooling and benefits with half reimbursed by the state. The executive committee will back full board approval, while the board chair supports two deputies or one. In other business, Tom Foster reports Wyoming Township owed 650 of 1250 billed for assessed work, with State's Attorney Dan Fish threatening court to collect the full amount.
President Bush will attend an international drug summit within 90 days in response to pressure from cocaine ravaged South American nations. Colombia, Peru and Bolivia issued the invitation, and the White House confirmed the plan despite earlier hesitancy.
In Washington UPI report anti nuclear activists return to court seeking a preliminary injunction to stop the Atlantis shuttle and its atomic powered payload. Judge Oliver Gasch previously rejected a similar bid but NASA had delayed launch due to engine and mechanical glitches.
Wisconsin based Wiscold Refrigeration Warehousing and Distribution announces a major expansion at Rochelle Cold Storage. The project adds 2.5 million cubic feet of cold storage to reach 7.7 million and creates 15 to 30 new jobs, making Rochelle the largest Wiscold plant and boosting the company to the sixth largest domestically owned cold storage facility. Mayor Gail Loefgren and officials attended a press conference led by CEO Gary R. Larner.
Robert Hastings of Albuquerque speaks on UFOs to about 250 attendees in the Little Theatre, with another 75 turned away at the door. Mike Chapman’s column on page 4 covers the talk.
USF G officials expect to open in their new downtown offices on November 20 after moving during November 17 to 19. Town Square Partners president Warren Walder said completion by November 15 is likely with trades working to meet the deadline. The 22,000 square foot space will host USF G on the second and third floors, while a 9,000 square foot addition is planned for Medical Arts Clinic, a deli, and a pharmacy with Snow White Bakery installing the Brown Bag Deli seating 40 to 50. Landscape work by Dean Sheaffer is budgeted at about $100,000.
