Local office can help homeless

Rochelle reports on a Tuesday feature about Dena Perkins who faced eviction and found aid from Tri County Opportunity Council. The agency aids the homeless across eight counties and helps with housing, finances, and access to programs. Perkins now rents a two bedroom apartment, avoiding eviction and crowding. The program relies on limited funds from a community service block grant which is quickly diminishing.

Rochelle mother finds help through Tri-County outreach

Sandra Julifs, Tri-County Council on Consent, notes nine-county aid reached 141 families in 1988 with 221 assisted since January. Perkins, a Rochelle native, losing factory work in Texas, moved to Rochelle. with $45 weekly income she faced bills. Tri-County helped with electricity rent and Head Start enrollment while Perkins seeks full-time work for Virginia and hopes her daughter earns well in adulthood.

Local plea on homeless heard in Washington

Sterling, Illinois residents traveling in six busloads to the Capitol press their demand for housing reform. Frederick Turk of Sterling, linked to Sane/Freeze, says low income housing aid has shrunk while poor numbers rise. He notes public housing access for the poor is about 28 percent and that housing costs have risen since 1950.
