Wind Hits Northern Illinois Causing Destruction and One Death

Strong winds gusting to 60 mph swept through Lee and Ogle Counties causing extensive property damage and a Rockford woman, Julia Letsinger, 21, to die when her car touched downed high voltage lines. Tornado sightings reported west of Rockford. ComEd logged widespread outages, with Byron Oregon area hardest hit. Rain measurements near Dixon and Rockford, and a forecast of tapering winds with a chance of snow flurries tonight and Thursday.

Sununu Said Named Bush Chief of Staff

President-elect George Bush reportedly will name New Hampshire Governor John Sununu as his chief of staff, in a trio of Cabinet selections announced within a week. Sununu, 49, would be chosen over Craig Fuller, 37, with reports citing his political heft to handle Congress. Brady was named treasury secretary to steady markets.

Milwaukee man shoots at trooper then kills himself in Illinois

Phuoc Tri Nguyen, 36, wanted on attempted murder charges in Wisconsin, shot Illinois State Trooper Jose Rangel and then killed himself. Rangel, 33, was wounded at Belvidere Toll Plaza and transported to St Anthony's in Rockford. he is critical. Nguyen had earlier shot his landlord in Milwaukee and wounded two gas station clerks in Glendale before resurfacing on I 90 near Belvidere.

Record exports cut trade deficit to 10.5 billion

September saw a 14.7 percent drop in the U.S. merchandise trade deficit to 10.5 billion, with imports down 2.8 percent to 38.7 billion and exports rising 2.6 percent to a record 28.2 billion. Analysts called the result a relief while noting ongoing challenges in narrowing the deficit in an expanding economy.
