Texas wins bid for giant superconducting supercollider site

Energy Department selects Texas as the preferred site for the 4.4 billion superconducting super collider ending competition among 25 states. The 53 mile tunnel near Waxahachie would employ 4,500 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent roles, generating about 20 billion in economic activity over 25 years. President Reagan will make final decision.

Loveland board wins court approval for elevator project

Circuit Judge Thomas Hornsby approved the Loveland Community House Board of Trustees plan to add a south side elevator, finding the trustees acted responsibly and in line with the will of Frances Hepfer. Turnout Rises in Lee and Ogle Counties

Amid a nation of light turnout voters in Lee and Ogle counties showed an increase compared with 1984. Lee County reports 77.32 percent turnout with 14 041 votes and Ogle County 76.02 percent with 17 947 votes as referendums and national sentiment influence participation.

Veterans Day observances planned in four area spots

Veterans Day ceremonies set in Dixon Polo Oregon Rochelle and nearby. In Dixon the Viet Nam Veterans chapter sponsors an 11 a.m. service at the Lee County Courthouse with Rep Myron Olson Dixon Mayor James Dixon and Chaplain Rev William Heft to give an invocation. A Dixon High School marching band ensemble will perform a rifle salute and taps. Local VFW post 540 USMC League Dixon American Legion post 12 Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts attend. Other services include Polo VFW and American Legion meals 5 to 9 p.m. Oregon services 10 30 a.m. Rochelle ceremony 10 30 a.m. with remarks by Mayor Gail Loefgren and VFW leaders and a bugler group. A wreath at the flagpole closes the day. The gun salute and taps occur near 11 a.m. to mark the 1918 armistice signing.
