Miniature horses draw big crowd at Dixon event

Dixon Park District hosted its first annual miniature horse day at Haymarket Square Park on a Wednesday afternoon. Trainer Dick Cox gives a ride to Molly Campbell, 3, on Suger man while Dancer receives a hug from Liz French, 4. About 700 people attended. the district plans annual events. Horses are owned by Joyce and Al Winch of Rock Falls.

China Executes Seven More in Beijing Uprising

Beijing reports seven protesters executed for taking part in the citywide uprising against martial law. The executions raise the two day total to at least 27, amidst international reactions of regret from the United States and condemnations from Britain, France, and West Germany. Xinhua identified the seven as rioters convicted June 17 for attacking troops and setting fire to military vehicles, as footage showed condemned prisoners awaiting death.

Byron attorney forms exploratory committee for Congress

Rural Byron lawyer Donald Manzullo announced a grass roots exploratory committee to decide on seeking the Republican nomination for the seat held by U S Rep Lynn Martin. Kim Gouker will chair the committee. Gouker sought potential local workers while noting no local staff yet. Manzullo cited long standing interest in politics and prior work in Washington in Rep John B Anderson's office.

Kamikaze rides highlight Dixon midway at Petunia Festival

The Kamikaze ride tops the Dixon midway lineup at the Petunia Festival opening June 29 on Page Park Drive near Dixon High School. Kids Day runs noon to 6 p m Friday with reduced tickets. Carnival plans include 35 rides with bumper cars and the Australian Worm, plus a return double ferris wheel. James and Kuhn tout a busy riverbank setup, safety rules limit parking near the band shell, and the Red Cross will staff a first aid station as crowds gather for a riverfront carnival atmosphere.

Northwestern Steel to expand Sterling plant with 30 million beam caster

Northwestern Steel and Wire of Sterling plans a 30 million jumbo beam blank caster, boosting the Rock River Valley economy. The employee owned company, founded in 1879, with about 2,800 Sterling workers, also announced acquiring the former Armco mill in Houston. The Sterling project will create 200 new jobs next summer and increase use of its 2.4 million ton capacity.

Illinois Senate to vote on legislators pay hike plan

Springfield CNS reports the Illinois Senate prepared to vote on SB 1621 boosting most lawmakers salaries by 6000 retroactive to Jan 11 and expanding pensions and district office funds. The measure would raise annual costs and add leadership posts, with final passage unclear.
