Trial date set for accused murderer Calvin Pierce
Lee County Circuit Court Judge Tomas Magdich scheduled July 18 as the new trial date for Calvin Pierce, accused in the November 2 stabbing of 80 year old Carrie Duncan of Paw Paw. The defense won a new trial after proving the state failed to disclose new evidence, a pathologist statement suggesting the forehead abrasion matched co-defendant Kathy Bennett’s shoe marks. Jury to be selected in Freeport and bused to Dixon, with a pre-trial conference July 13. defense seeks fees for the first trial totaling $11,960.70 based on 165.5 hours of work.

Lost boy Dane Jordal found after family fears abduction
Five year old Dane Jordal of Steward wandered from home with his dog PJ and was found about 5:30 p.m. by his grandfather Merlin Jordal near the Steward home. Lifeline Helicopter and local fire departments assisted in the search. The boy was wet and dirty but unharmed and will stay closer to home for now.

Rochelle fireworks show funded for July 4
Rochelle will host a July 4 fireworks display at Atwood Park after fund raising reached about $5,200. An additional $800 is sought. Contributions included Wal-Mart $1,500, Del Monte $500, Moose Lodge $150, Knights of Columbus $100, Boy Scouts $1,700, and Veterans of Foreign Wars $1,000.
