Deficit rises in May as imports hit record high
Washington reports the U.S. trade deficit widened to 10.24 billion dollars in May, up from April, as imports climbed to a record 40.7 billion while exports edged down. Oil imports surged to 4.8 billion, and declines in capital goods, consumer goods, and autos reduced exports. The deficit’s year-to-date total improves slightly versus 1988.
