Unemployment in Lee County Rises in December 1988

Major oil exporters gather for talks on market stability

London reports that the world's leading oil exporting nations met for the first time in nine months to discuss cooperation with OPEC and other producers. Technical experts prepared positions ahead of joint talks, aiming to stabilise prices and possibly lay groundwork for future production cuts. The non-OPEC delegations stressed market stabilization as a shared goal for both consumers and producers.

Bush to visit China amid Sino-Soviet summit prep

Rotary International opens doors to women members world wide

Rotary International’s Council on Legislation voted to allow women to join any of its 23,900 chapters in 164 countries with bylaws permitting qualified women as of July 1, 1989. UPI reports the move follows later U.S. and Canada approvals since 1987 and could face a challenge at the May convention if 10 percent of clubs object.

Rochelle seeks federal funds for Route 38 work and bridge project

Rochelle officials presented plans to obtain about 250000 in federal funds to expand Illinois Route 38 to a four lane highway in two phases from Highway 251 to Interstate 39 with phase one bidding in October. City projects include Caron Road sidewalks traffic signals and a pedestrian crossing at Brookside Drive plus a South Main Street bridge rehabilitation costing over 500000 with the city contributing under 100000.
