Illinois' mild winter continues into February says NWS

The National Weather Service predicts an unusually mild Illinois winter lasting into mid February. Meteorologists note no sub zero days, above normal temperatures across the state, and below average snowfall with the jet stream parked north of the region. Pinewood Derby Races Boost Cub Scouts In Dixon

Abortion Regulation May Move to States Under Roe Reconsideration

Attorney General Dick Thornburgh said if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, abortion regulation would likely shift to state legislatures and governors. He noted President Reagan and Bush oppose Roe and that the court could revisit the issue in a Missouri case, with the Justice Department urging review. 1,000 Die in Soviet Quake in Tadzhikistan

A strong earthquake struck Tadzhikistan near Dushanbe at 2:02 a.m. causing landslides that buried villages Sharora Kulipoyen and Okulibolo. Tass news agency says up to 1,000 dead with hundreds in Sharora and 70 in Okulibolo. No warning was possible as people slept.
