Lee County jobs rise as Dixon area expands industry
Industrial employment in Dixon grew by 483 jobs from December 1987 to December 1988. Tim Chase of the Dixon Industrial Development Association reported at the DCPA annual dinner at Brandywine Lodge. A new marketing slide show, prepared by Linda and Eric Brantley and narrated by Tom Wadsworth, highlights Dixon’s bid to become Northwestern Illinois’ fastest growing business community by 2000, including the enterprise zone and the Northern Illinois Automotive Corridor.

Stockton school attack leaves five children dead
Patrick Purdy, 26, in full combat gear sprayed a Stockton playground with an AK-47 and two pistols, killing five children and wounding 32 before killing himself. Police said he used multiple aliases and had a long arrest record with a weapons conviction.

Woolly mammoth tooth found on Amboy farm in Illinois
Jeff Bonnell and his son Jason unearthed a rocklike object in a creek bed that classmates dubbed a dinosaur tooth. NIU anthropologist Dr Milton Deemer identified it as a rare woolly mammoth molar dating to about 15 000 years ago, potentially older. Preservation and tests planned at NIU this spring to age the specimen and search for further remains.
