Mystery surrounds cause of United Airlines cargo door mishap

Investigators probe a 10 by 40 foot hole ripped around a United 747 cargo door after a mid air explosion was suspected. Nine died aboard the Auckland bound flight 811, with 21 injured as the jet returned to Honolulu. Debris searches, FBI and NTSB teams join Coast Guard units to locate survivors and determine if a bomb or metal fatigue caused the disaster. The plane, delivered in 1970, landed safely after losing power in one engine and dumping fuel.

Bush vows to fight for Tower as China trip begins

President Bush said he will fight to the end for confirmation of John Tower as defense secretary and urged senators to look at the facts rather than rumors. He spoke before leaving Tokyo after Emperor Hirohito's funeral, amid questions on Tower and his first overseas trip.

District 271 teachers OK three year pact

Lee Center District 271 Education Association ratified a three year contract after a long delay. The pact raises base pay by 500 over the term with 100 this year and 200 yearly bumps, district will share retirement costs, and insurance remains district paid. Ratification was 32 to 12, board approval pending.

Alleged arsonist in custody in Dixon

Bonnie Balayti, a Dixon woman, is in custody at the Lee County Law Enforcement Center on aggravated arson and arson charges for allegedly setting fires at 514 1/2 Nachusa Ave. No injuries were reported. Fire Chief James Hill said fires were started in a bathroom and on a living room couch, with damage estimated at $8,000. The state’s attorney filed charges the day after the fire.

Bombay clashes over Rushdie novel kill 10 protesters

In Bombay 2000 Muslims clashed with police over The Satanic Verses killing 10 protesters and wounding 50. Rioters hurled rocks bottles and acid bombs as baton charges failed to quell the violence. Rushdie, in hiding under police protection, faced calls tied to Iran's reward offer.
