Americans Evacuated From Beirut Embassy Amid Skirmishes

About a dozen of the 37 Americans at the U S Embassy in Beirut were evacuated by helicopters to Cyprus as fighting flared across east Beirut. A fragile cease-fire held in most areas after three days of heavy clashes that killed 57 people. The State Department and Pentagon provided limited details.

Tax relief possible for Leaf River folks

Leaf River residents heard that annexation by Forreston could lower taxes by about 1.43 dollars per 100 of assessed value. Officials said the state would absorb Leaf River’s debt if merged, with about 213 917 dollars owed by year end. A public meeting drew roughly 100 residents in Leaf River School hall to discuss potential reorganization and continued schooling for younger students.
