Workers Skip Shift at Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling

About 200 employees failed to report for the 3 p.m. shift at Northwestern Steel and Wire’s west end mills in Sterling. The plant employs roughly 2,700, with workers from Lee and Ogle Counties. Management and Local 63 declined comment as callers claimed a protest over wage and fringe cutbacks since the ESOP transition two years ago. The strike aims to last 32 hours across four shifts.
