Illinois AIDS test repeal urged by public health director
Illinois public health director Dr. Bernard Turnock will recommend repealing the state law requiring AIDS tests for marriage licenses. Of 242,808 tested in 1988 only 23 were positive, and the cost per case is about 312000 dollars. The program, a year old in January, yielded a 1 in 10000 infection rate, but Turnock says the yield is too low to justify the expense though the research proves Illinois is unique in premarital testing.
