UPI photo shows a Maltese aide de camp holding an umbrella for U.S. President George Bush as he reviews the guard of honor in rainy Malta. Soviet sailors swab the deck of the guided missile cruiser Slava in the final hours before the summit scheduled to begin aboard the ship.
Leaders of the United States and Soviet Union arrived in Malta for a two day summit to discuss Europe amid rapid postwar changes. The meeting off Marsaxlokk Bay aims to shape future East West security while avoiding renewed Cold War tensions.
Philippine officials claimed the seventh coup attempt against President Aquino was nearly over with U.S. jets aiding loyalists. Rebel forces regrouped near Camp Aguinaldo while Philippine jets accidentally hit ground troops, killing three soldiers and a civilian as fighting continued and casualties rose past 24.
Raisa Gorbachev accompanied her husband to Malta for talks with President Bush as Barbara Bush remained in Washington. The Malta gathering, like Iceland in 1986, avoided socializing while Raisa aimed for the spotlight with meet the people tours and a late night stroll on Malta’s ramparts.
The Illinois Department on Aging highlights elder abuse forms including financial exploitation neglect and emotional abuse. The Elder Abuse and Neglect Act of 1988 funds programs to identify situations and assist victims over age 60. Lutheran Social Services of Illinois runs Project Secure serving four counties with case workers who intervene and coordinate services. Mount Morris United Way fundraising drive surpasses its goal with total pledges reaching 33 242. A bowl-a-thon added another 2 242 if all pledges pay, with 35 bowlers and 30 organizations benefiting from the drive.
In Dixon downtown on Friday night the Candlelight Walk drew crowds over 1500 as carolers performed a live nativity scene and luminaries lined the streets. Horse-drawn wagon rides and refreshments complemented the festive event.
