Inflation ease keeps July CPI at 0.2 percent rise

UPI reports July CPI edged up 0.2 percent, matching June, easing year’s inflation to 5.5 percent annually. Energy costs fell 0.7 percent with gasoline down 2.2 percent, while food rose 0.3 percent. Excluding food and energy, inflation grew 0.4 percent, and apparel and transportation declined as end-of-season discounts aided price drops.

Court rules miniature horse Ragtime a household pet in Thousand Oaks

Ventura court decides Patty Fairchild may keep Ragtime the miniature horse after a two year dispute with Oakbrook Homeowners Association. Judge Edwin Osborne notes lack of clear guidelines and warns future cases will be handled individually. The case follows neighbor complaints over property values and health rules. Ragtime has drawn attention since the 1987 Thousand Oaks council order to remove the animal.

Budget Deficit Seen Higher Yet No Sequestration Trigger

The CBO projects the fiscal 1990 deficit between 18 and 24 billion above Gramm Rudman targets, but not enough to trigger automatic sequestration. It cites slower growth, higher rates and inflation as reasons for differing estimates, with possible deficits near 105 to 124 billion depending on asset sales and full resolution of the budget plan.

9 1 1 rate hike hits Lee County system

The Lee County 9 1 1 emergency system, in operation about a year, faces a near doubling of costs for five agencies including the Lee County Sheriff's Department Dixon Police Dixon Rural and City Fire Departments and Advance Ambulance of Dixon. Center in Des Plaines notified a monthly rate increase to 49.78 per trunk, totaling 248.90, far above the expected 120. The ICC tariff is cited as the reason and officials await a response from the Illinois Commerce Commission.

Vietnam veteran Richardson executed in Alabama chair

Herbert Lee Richardson, a 43 year old Vietnam veteran, was executed in Holman Prison for the 1977 pipe bomb murder of 11 year old Rena Mae Callins. He faced the chair calmly saying he held no ill feelings and received communion with an Assemblies of God minister before the single electric shock killed him at 12 14 a.m. local time.

Dixon seeks annexation and B-3 rezoning for Bloody Gulch site

Dixon real estate broker Ed Yingling filed a petition to annex and rezone 5 016 acres at Bloody Gulch Road and Illinois Route 26 for a possible motel complex. The Dixon Planning Commission will hear at 7 30 p m Wednesday. The proposal seeks B 3 designation to allow business and wholesale firms. Yingling represents Iowa man Patel who owns motels in eastern Iowa and may build a 36 unit motel on the site. J H Hummel and Sons of rural Dixon own the property.

Indicted 16YearOld Linked to Oregon Boy Death

Oregon 16 year old Kyle Brandon was indicted by the Ogle County Grand Jury on three reckless homicide charges and one no passing zone violation after a Route 64 crash killed 11 year old Jeffrey Lynch. He posted 3000 bond and is due August 25 for arraignment. An unrelated indictment charged Floyd Jordan with unlawful weapon possession after officials seized 17 weapons and 620 rounds of ammo at his Shangri La home. Jordan faces a Class 3 felony.
