Wright faces House ethics charges over 69 alleged violations
The House ethics committee formally charged Speaker Jim Wright with 69 alleged violations of congressional rules, the first time a speaker has been accused in this manner. The panel, with six Democrats and six Republicans, found reason to believe Wright violated the code in five areas, setting the stage for a trial-like hearing and possible punishment by the full House. Wright has 21 days to respond, after which the committee has 30 days to judge and possibly recommend action. Wright supporters predicted he will survive. critics urged stepping aside temporarily. Wright spoke at an AFL CIO event as defense preparations began.

Copter crashes in prison escape attempt at MDC
A helicopter swooped into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Miami and briefly picked up a prisoner before crashing near the prison walls. The pilot, seriously injured, and the escaping convict, believed to be Ben Kramer, were hurt. The pilot was the only person aboard when the chopper dipped over the yard. The prisoner reportedly jumped on, then crashed with or was thrown free as the aircraft went down.

Illinois man among four winners in record $69 million Lotto

HUD to Allow Evictions for Drug Crimes in Public Housing
Housing Secretary Jack Kemp announced that public housing leases will include explicit provisions allowing termination of tenancy for tenants or household members convicted of illegal drug use trafficking or related crimes.
