Pursuit of excellence drives SVCC mission and growth

Sauk Valley Community College centers its operation on excellence under President Dr. Richard Behrendt. The college sits on a 163 acre Rock River site between Dixon and Sterling and serves a district of six counties with about 110,000 people. About 4,000 students are enrolled this year. Behrendt views excellence as a key teaching, marketing and financing tool guiding SVCC’s development.

SVCC sees growth fueled by marketing and athletic investment

Sauk Valley Community College president Behrendt links enrollment rise to marketing efforts and tuition differences that attract area high school graduates and GED seekers. He notes 1985-86 low point followed by steady gains, with 20 percent of 1987-88 students from Sauk district high schools and 25 percent in 1988-89, plus increased adult enrollment and stronger athletic programs aiming at national championships.

Exxon Valdez spill menaced as refloat plan moves forward

Army of 1,100 workers and 100 boats battled the Prince William Sound slick after 11 million gallons of Alaska crude leaked from the Exxon Valdez last March. The plan calls for a high tide refloat attempt Wednesday as Captain Hazelwood, fired and sought on criminal charges, remains at large.

Alternate Route 2 scrapped for Illinois Route 2

IDOT will not build an alternate Route 2 bypass. Officials say upgrades to the existing road will protect environmentally sensitive areas around Castle Rock State Park and the Rock River while maintaining vital Dixon to Rockford links. DOC and IDOT plan joint meetings to finalize design edits by month end.

Light voter turnout slows in Lee County races

Telegraph staff notes very slow turnout in Lee County with no percentages available. County Clerk Rosemary Emmert calls it voter apathy as many races are uncontested and township officials face low participation. Oregon precincts report 38 and 50 ballots by 11:30 a.m., well below normal noon totals.
