Home gardening and flower pressing tips for autumn decor
A guide to preserving flowers and plants through pressing drying and assembling into home decor. Tips cover selecting specimens on dry days, layering between paper, pressing under weights for 24 hours and several days, handling thick stems, blanching stone crops, drying berries and ferns, and making transparencies, lamp shades, or framed bouquets. Also includes composting and repotting advice for window plants and general care for healthy growth.
Potting and Repotting Tips for Healthy Plants
The article advises soaking new pots for hours to prevent soil moisture loss, recommends washing old pots with warm soap and soda, and notes fresh soil from wiry grass is ideal. It also covers making compost from rotted tufts, adding sand for lightness, and preparing leaf mould from autumn leaves ready in eighteen months. Thoroughly decayed cow manure is mentioned as a soil amendment.
What are Hardy Herbaceous Perennials in gardening terms
The article explains hardy herbaceous perennials as plants whose roots survive year after year and which die back or persist above ground after frost. It contrasts them with woody shrubs and tender bedding plants, arguing for a mix of traditional hardy perennials and newer bedding styles depending on space and goals. It notes easy maintenance and the value of dividing clumps when needed.
